This painting of Ju Ju is a portrait of the artist’s youngest apprentice at age 14. Capturing her intelligence and a sense of seriousness, the artist depicts that point in a girl’s life where she is transforming into a woman. The lighting in this painting is of particular interest, as there are two distinctive light sources; one coming from the sitter’s upper left illuminating her face, and the second from behind her head, causing an earthy halo from man made spot lights to appear around the rim of her hair. The artist accurately captured the sensation of this phenomenon with hot pink, wild, brushstrokes.
