Writing for the Visual Arts - Florence Academy of Art
Published on July 21, 2022
September 26 - December 9
Taught remotely from the Florence campus
November 28 - December 9
In-person option in Florence
If you would like to write with mastery about figurative art, or simply further your knowledge of art history and the history of literature about art, this course will survey figurative art throughout the ages, while examining the techniques that literature has historically used to write about art.
Starting with the Ancient Greeks and Romans, progressing on to the Medieval period, the arrival of Humanism, the rediscovery of Classical forms, the establishment of the Academies during the Renaissance, and the role of the Academies through the Early Modern period, you will learn to analyze select works by their medium, composition, subject matter, and patronage, and to place them within the greater context of the long tradition of figurative art. By studying the rhetorical techniques that literature has historically used in writing about art, you will develop your writing skills through short weekly exercises, moving step-by-step from literary strategies to the organization and construction of a solid expository essay by the end of the course.
In-person Option: Students may experience the Florence Academy from within to understand how students train to become figurative painters and sculptors, while also touring the main museums, galleries, and churches of Florence, during the final 2 weeks of class.

Masterclass Workshop - Form Painting within the Figure with Darren Kingsley and Stephen Early
Published on July 20, 2022
This workshop focuses on the principles essential to transforming abstract flat shapes into fully dimensional forms. Students will study the figure in a way that allows the translation of a 3-dimensional world into a 2-dimensional painting conveying the fullest possible sculptural form. Students will focus on painting the figure with a complete range of values and develop the ability to make accurate, relative value calibrations. The focus is on structure, anatomy, proportion, light direction, handling of edges, abstract movements through the figure, and an understanding of basic and complex forms of the figure. These concepts are executed through an application of opaque and semi-opaque paint in the light and shadow areas. Control of the paint is a priority and is essential to achieving the required goals. Students can choose either a limited color palette or traditional black and white grisaille painting to keep the emphasis on form modeling.
The workshop runs from August 8 - 12, 2022 at Studio Incamminati, 1901 S. 9th Street, BOK, 7th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19148.

Every year Joke Frima wins prestigious prizes at international salons for realists in painting.
