Jules Tavernier and the Elem Pomo

Published on December 30, 2021

Upon its completion in 1878, Jules Tavernier’s "Dance in a Subterranean Roundhouse at Clear Lake, California" was hailed in a San Francisco newspaper as “by far the most remarkable picture ever painted on the Pacific Coast.” The French-born artist’s painting now returns to California for the first time in more than 140 years as the central focus of the Jules Tavernier and the Elem Pomo exhibition at the de Young. The exhibition includes more than a dozen paintings, watercolors, prints, and photographs by Jules Tavernier (1844–1889) and puts forth a new interpretation of his career masterwork and his other compositions of the Western United States by offering a multiplicity of voices and perspectives, including those of Pomo cultural leaders and curators. Also on view are more than fifty historic and contemporary Pomo baskets and regalia pieces that celebrate the enduring artistry and resiliency of the Pomo artists over several generations and highlight their continued cultural presence in their homelands today.

The exhibition runs from December 18, 2021 - April 17, 2022 at the de Young Museum, 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr., San Francisco, CA 94118.

Southern Atelier Now Accepting Applications for the Miano Apprenticeship Program

Published on December 15, 2021

The Southern Atelier is proud to present their apprenticeship program under the direction of ARC Associate Living Master Charles Miano, designed as a 4-level program with a completely unique 2-fold course of study. In addition to traditional long term projects such as casts, master copies, portraits and figurative works, the apprenticeship curriculum highlights rigorous short, intermediate and long practice from the live model. This balanced approach develops hand eye coordination quickly and improves an artist's ability to see and capture life and movement dramatically while at the same time learning to finish works of art to the highest standards of excellence.

Spaces are limited to provide one-on-one instruction and detailed attention, so students can thrive in their study no matter their entry level. Throughout the apprenticeship program, students may also attend workshops at Southern Atelier given by visiting master artists from around the world. The Miano Apprenticeship is broken into trimester terms, for $3800 per term. Apprentices may benefit from having their own individual work area, teaching opportunities, public gallery representation, and a key to the Atelier studio, located in luminous Sarasota, Florida.

Heroic nudes, fierce hunts, splendid military processions, and Bacchic revels attest to the artist’s extraordinary ability to translate an array of sources into new subjects.

The exhibition runs from November 10, 2021 - January 24, 2022 at the Getty Villa, Getty Villa Dr., Pallisades, CA 90272.

In American Waters: The Sea in American Painting

Published on December 9, 2021

For over 200 years, artists have been inspired to capture the beauty, violence, poetry, and transformative power of the sea in American life. Oceans play a key role in American society, and still today, the sea continues to inspire painters to capture its mystery and power.

In American Waters is a new exhibition in which marine painting is revealed to be so much more than ship portraits. Depicted by a diverse range of modern and historical artists, this exhbition presents the sea as an expansive way to reflect on American culture and environment, learn how coastal and maritime symbols moved inland across the United States, and consider what it means to be “in American waters.”

The exhibition runs from November 6, 2021 - January 31, 2022 at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, 600 Museum Way, Bentonville, AR 72712.
