The Portrait Sketch with Patrick Byrnes at Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art
Published on January 30, 2020
In this five-day workshop at the ARC Approved Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art, artists will learn to create alla prima portraits that evince the beauty and humanity of the model with freshness, sensitivity and lively detail. Using a lucid step-by-step approach, participants will paint five portrait sketches of five different live models. Patrick will guide artists with daily demonstrations and in-depth personal critiques through each stage of the process – from creating a strong likeness with accurate drawing, to color mixing, modeling form and finishing details. Cranial anatomy, materials, paint handling, and the physics of light will also be discussed throughout each session. While this workshop is mainly geared towards painters with some previous experience in oils, artists who prefer to create portrait drawings in graphite or charcoal are also encouraged to participate. Each day brings a new portrait model. Workshop instruction combines guided group demonstrations with personalized one-on-one critiques.
Participants will learn how to create convincing, sensitive portraits through a coherent, rigorous development of their technical skills in drawing and painting.
Spaces are limited so book early.

Princeton Academy of Art - Intro to Academic Sculpture Course
Published on January 23, 2020
The Princeton Academy of Art is offering a course that will introduce students to the Academic method of conceptualizing and sculpting the human figure, which relies heavily on composition, construction, and the anatomical underpinnings of idealized classicist form from antiquity. This approach is part of a living tradition that has passed down through an unbroken chain of generations since the Russian Academy's inception over 250 years ago.
Working from models and the school's extensive cast collection, students will be guided to see the form through clear demarcation of planes that integrate the weight and proportion of casts as well as the gesture and likeness of the model. They are pushed past simple silhouettes to think three dimensionally to feel how the various anatomical planes flow together and bind a complex set of distinct anatomical structures into the totality that is sculpture.
Classes run from February 7 - June 26, 2020 on Fridays from 10:30 am - 4:00 pm.

A Triumphant Triad: Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn
Published on January 7, 2020
Neill Slaughter will be presenting a lecture at the Salmagundi Club on John Singer Sargent, Joaquín Sorolla, and Anders Zorn.
These artists became internationally renowned during their lifetimes as portrait painters. Ironically, all three eventually grew weary of the demands of commissioned portraiture, and of having to deal with pompous and prickly personalities, preferring instead to paint landscapes
or seascapes often populated with peasants, family, and friends. All three of these internationally famous artists fell into obscurity after their deaths with a revival of interest in their work occurring only in the last three decades.
The lecture takes places on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at the Salmagundi Club, 47 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10003 and admission is $10.

DVI Branching Off
Published on January 3, 2020
"I have worked with Mandy Theis for the last five years in the development and founding of the Da Vinci Initiative which focuses on training K – 12 art teachers in public and private schools in the atelier methods. The 3,000 plus art teachers we have worked with so far are enthusiastic about bringing traditional skills in the visual arts into their classrooms. Each teacher will touch thousands of children’s lives throughout their teaching career so we are very optimistic that the future generation will have the deep respect of traditional methods that we here hold so dear. The Da Vinci Initiative program has been thriving so well that starting January 1, 2020 it will be standing as an independent organization separately from myself and ARC’s direct involvement. I am proud to call Mandy a friend and ally and am honored to have had the opportunity to help found a budding atelier movement within the art teacher community. We at ARC wish Mandy well as she continues the DVI mission. ARC will be continuing the teens category in the 15th International ARC Salon Competition as there are many talented students between the ages of 13 – 19 studying traditional training methods and techniques.
