New ARC Purchase Award

September 29, 2016

We are pleased to announce the second purchase award for the 12th International ARC Salon. Barbara Fox's drawing titled, Carra, has now been added to the ARC collection.
"The drawing Carra was inspired by an exhibition with the theme Synesthesia. Imagining the phenomena of synesthesia, in which a person may see sound as color, I wanted to illustrate what a musician may experience. I portrayed the harp player, Carra, seeing each string as a color. My lovely friend Carra posed for me; she is a talented musician, but I wasn't thrilled about drawing her instruments of choice, (the accordian and the hurdy-gurdy), so I took some other photos of a harp player to incorporate and achieve a great image. The drawing is charcoal and pastel. For the opening of the exhibition Synesthesia, we were asked to provide a piece of music to accompany our art, so I chose an Irish ballad called The Musical Priest. The haunting music, played on a harp, fits the mood of the drawing."

Part VI in Educational Series Published

September 23, 2016

The sixth in a series of 15 plus articles by ARC COO, Kara Lysandra Ross, has been published in the Epoch Times. This article focuses on European Art and the Influence of the French Academies.
"The Academy Julian has the important distinction of being the first school to accept female students, and it did so a full 30 years in advance of the École des Beaux-Arts. By 1873 Julian had men and woman studying alongside each other in the same studio, but after criticism, the suggestion of impropriety, and laws at the time that made mixed sex classes difficult, he quickly established separate schools for men and woman."

No. 4 in Garrett's Vintage est Nouveau series, String of Pearls, 30" x 40", is a an example of an evolution of all of Tina's works celebrating strong female personalities. A homage to Jackie Warfel, the eccentric owner of the collection of vintage clothing depicted in the series, String of Pearls is in essence a portrait of Jackie's spirit, a woman, now in her 80's who at her heart personifies all the women depicted in the Vintage est Nouveau series, bold, confident and comfortable in her skin. String of Pearls was a top 100 finalist in Figurativas 2015 hosted by the Foundation of the Arts and Artists at the Museum of Modern Art Europe, (MEAM), and a National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society 2015 Best of America, Best Oil Painting by a Signature Artist Award winner, and the People's Choice Award winner as well. About the purchase Garrett said, " I could not be prouder that String of Pearls will join my painting, City Blues, in ARC's renowned collection."

The fifth in a series of 15 plus articles by ARC COO, Kara Lysandra Ross, has been published in the Epoch Times. This article focuses on The Paris Salon.
"Renoir was recorded noting to his dealer, Durand-Ruel, in 1881: 'I am going to try and explain to you why I exhibit at the salon. In Paris, there are scarcely fifteen collectors capable of liking a painter without the backing of the salon. And there are another 80,000 who won’t buy so much as a postcard unless the painter exhibits there.'"

TAFA Sponsors Portrait Category in ARC Salon

September 8, 2016

The Texas Academy of Figurative Art is pleased to sponsor the first, second and third place awards for the Portraiture Category in the ARC Salon. TAFA was founded in 2007, and is the only fine art academy in Texas that offers a full-time curriculum in figurative realist drawing and painting. TAFA provides an atelier experience for contemporary artists seeking to connect with a foundational and historical approach to fine art education. Our curriculum reflects both the Old Master working methods alongside the Academic Realist approach. The primary emphasis is on rendering the human figure accurately from direct observation. They also embrace the ideals in support of traditional canons of beauty which have been accepted throughout Western European art history.

TAFA is thankful for the Art Renewal Center's commitment to help advance the atelier movement and the revival of classically-based fine art education. We are proud to partner with the ARC Salon to support the highest achievements in contemporary realist fine art.

Although there were still a majority of male artists, there were many female artists who established successful careers in both France and England during this period."
