“I painted this portrait of Jeff while teaching a class at The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art in Minneapolis. Russian painter Ivan Kramskoi has long been an inspiration to me. He captured the beauty and dignity of his subjects as a devotional to the medium. With Kramskoi's work in mind, Jeff was a natural choice of subject. I was particularly interested in capturing the expression on his face with the slightly raised eyebrow and the character of his beard. I was also drawn to the drama of single-source lighting to enhance the importance of the model's features.
Jeff was an exceptionally dedicated model. Not only did he prefer to walk a long distance to model every week, but he also enjoyed listening to my critiques of the students as he was posing. He expressed interest in discussing art methods and philosophies during modeling breaks, which further enriched the model/artist experience.” – LAURA TUNDEL
