It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

Oil on canvas

  • Honorable Mention / Still Life

"This painting pays homage to Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. In the introduction, King mentions that he set out to write the longest popular novel in history. Why? Because 'it seemed like a good idea at the time.' Hence, the title of my painting, which is my 'Dark Tower' of sorts. I filled the canvas with a variety of textures and objects, each of which create their own challenge in terms of execution/process. The items are pulled directly from the storyline but are carefully arranged for both narrative and symbolism purposes. While there are numerous objects attracting the viewer's attention, the overarching composition is a large dark tower-like shape placed above a field of red roses. I had attempted to adequately convey the complexity and beauty of this story in the past, but with unsatisfying results. However, after my atelier training was complete, I was finally able to do it justice." - JULIE BECK
